Easy to use

Setup and using the Atlona LinkCast Wireless HD Audio/Video System is very easy, but if this is the first time you have this kind of product. You would better read through the user manual to get familiar of the setup steps. The LinkCast Wireless HD System can be set up in minutes. Just plug in and connect the LinkCast A/V base station, via the included HDMI cable, to any HDTV or projector. Then, insert the LinkCast system expander into the HDMI output and USB port on your audio/video device. Your source device has to have a HDMI output as well as a USB port for power.

Extendable Multi to One Sharing Network

The most exciting feature is how flexible it is. Atlona LinkCast allow a receiver sync with up to 5 transmitter. That means you can switch between PCs, Blu-ray Disc players, DVD players, Network Media Players, or other entertainment devices without need of any plug and unplug activity. By adding more transmitters into your system, you can set up a multi-to-one sharing network. One kit includes one wireless transmitter and one receiver. You need to purchase an additional transmitter for each source component you want to add. When you add one new transmitter, you need to synch it to the receiver.

The synch button on the transmitter is very tiny and hard to reach, you may need a pencil, pen, or sewing needle to perform this mission. Once you have done these and two sources syncs with the same AT-LinkCast AV receiver unit.

Practical distance

LinkCast has an economic wireless transmission range: Approximately 40 feet(13 meters). That range is sufficient for normal household and requires less power compared with other long distant device. It also minimizes the risk of being overheated, which is complained by customers for Belkin Wireless HDMI transmitter. Atlona LinkCast uses the WHDI wireless protocol, which doesn’t require direct line-of-sight between the transmitters and the receiver. But if possible, limiting obstructions between the transmitter and receiver and avoiding other wireless devices, such as wireless internet routers and phones, too close to them is desirable. Nyrius and IOgear have similar products share some common range of broadcast with this LinkCast system.

Performance

For testing, I had both PC and Blu-ray Disc player and connected them with 2 transmitters respectively. The LinkCast gives a successful switching under the control of the remote included in the same package. During my test switching between sources usually requires 3 seconds to go back to normal state. For both sources, The unit supports uncompressed video resolutions up to 1080p HD video including 3D, with a latency of less than one millisecond for incredibly reliable wireless HD video performance. I got a full 1080p resolution video on the TV screen. Wired sound and wireless video were flawless with zero latency or time lapse.

For audio transmission, I am not surprised to find that accessing standard Dolby Digital and DTS is no problem. But like other WHDI devices such as Nyrius and IOGear, the LinkCast is not compatible with Dolby TrueHD/DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreams. This means that you cannot experience 7.1 channels surrounding sound(New AV receiver has that feature). Your player will automatically downscale its audio output to a standard Dolby Digital or DTS bitstream for LinkCast wireless transmission. To be honest, I feel more comfortable and familiar with the “OLD” DTS 5.1 sound. It’s congruent with the WHDI 1.0 wireless home digital interface standard, and HDCP 1.2 protocols as well.

• 1 x 6′ HDMI cable

• 1 x Remote

• 1 x Swivel Adapter

• 1 x AV Adapter

• 1 x User Manual

Atlona includes many necessary components in the box. Among these stuffs, the swivel adapter and the remote are worth to be mentioned about. The swivel adapter come in handy if you are short on space behind your source device, or if the HDMI output is too close to other connections, and as a result, may prevent direct connection of the transmitter of the HDMI output.

This remote is quite small, but it is important. All of the functions of this system are controlled via this remote. This remote not only let’s you watch HDTV in any room of your home. It lets you control the source device from any other room. You may notice that buttons labeled with numbers on the bottom of the remote allow direct selection of up to 5 wireless sources. So take care not to misplace or lose it.

My Suggestion for Atlona LinkCast Wireless HD system

Atlona LinkCast Wireless HD Audio/Video station is not a perfect one in this category. But if you want the most flexible and cost effective wireless HDMI transmitter Altona LinkCast is no doubt a very powerful competitor. I have used so far, but improvement is needed on signal access time when switching between two sources, as well as providing easier transmitter synch access button, make the synch button a little larger, and assigned a different color to it. It would also be advantageous to have compatibility with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstreams.

If you are looking for a way to eliminate long HDMI cable runs within a room, and/or would like to place your HDMI-enabled source devices away from your home theater receiver or TV/video projector, definitely check out the Atlona LinkCast Wireless HD Audio/Video System as a possible solution. Amazon.com offers it at a more affordable price.
