Avantree Saturn mini apt-x Bluetooth Receiver and Transmitter 2-in-1 Review

Introduction

Avantree Saturn is unique member in Bluetooth receiver family. It is also a Bluetooth transmitter with the new apt-x codec for both transmission and receiving. In means that with the help of this little device you can turn an iPhone into apt-x compatible if you like. The sound quality under apt-x will improve much better than that via AAC standard. The other convenience you get from this amazing gadget is some old portable hifi players without Bluetooth chip as iPod classic or Rio Karma can take advantage of new wireless tech with it. The elegant compact design gives Saturn a very tiny size 1.5 x 1.1 x 0.4 inches and a very light weight of 0.3 ounces. 0.3 ounces also includes a long lasting rechargeable internal lithium battery. Very impressive!.

For receiver

If you want it acts as a Bluetooth music receiver then it is just like any other bluetooth receiver. It has a selection switch for changing modes between transmitting and receiving. Slide the switcher into Rx.  You connect it with your home audio system, headphone, headset, car system or what ever playback device you want. Next you pair and play. Just routine steps to move forward. To turn off the Saturn press and hold the MFB button for about 3-4 seconds until you see the RED LED light is on for about 1 second, and then goes off. After that, we can move to the next step. Avantree-Saturn-Music-Audio-Bluetooth-Transceiver-headphone

Next press and hold the MFB button on the Saturn for a few seconds until the blue LED light is blinking quickly, it means entering the pairing mode. Saturn will search for nearby bluetooth devices. Saturn’s blue LED light will blink twice every four seconds to indicate pairing is complete. Plug in your device’s analog audio output to Saturn and then turn the device on, it should work. Double Avantree Saturn

I bought two Saturn in order to stream with apt-x. One Avantree Saturn as a transmitter is set up and hooked into analog output on an old stereo. The other Avantree Saturn is set as a receiver, so I can use any old wired headphones as a new wireless to playback, and keep the Bluetooth Radio away from my head. It connects automatically to the last paired device. You just have to turn the Avantree Saturn on. The disadvantage is that it cannot be recharged while connected. So you cannot use it while charging the battery.

Long Lasting Battery

Manual states that for TX mode the battery life is about 10 hours and for RX mode is about 9hours. It is reasonable transmitting will utilize considerably more power. It only takes 2 hours to be fully charged. I have never used mine until fully discharged for mainly used as a transmitter. I have used it for music play 5 or 6 hours continuously without issue. I have had periods of over 6 weeks of no use, and charge was still sufficient for about 2 – 3 hour playing. And When utilized as a receiver it provided me more than 9 hours wireless music, not continuously, during my travel in Germany. It is quite enough for a high demanding music fan.

Sound Quality

Apt-x offers a higher broadcast bitrates and improves sound quality. It preserves more sonic details via Bluetooth than before.  Saturn mini apt-x Bluetooth receiver sounds much better both in TX and RX mode. Sense of space and positional feeling are vident, no audio drop-outs. Scale and bass are also good. The sound quality is as good as can be expected from Bluetooth. I’m sure the aptX codec assists in this regard.

For music it works great, the sound is good. For videos not. Whiles watching a video, the transmitter will turn off the sound during the silent parts (between dialogues). The behavior is noticeable and disturbing. The solution might be to turn the volume of the device (TV, mediaplayer) to the maximum. This was not a solution for me.

I want to insert this into my TV so that I can hear the sound directly into my Bluetooth (Resound) hearing aids and the rest of the family can hear the TV speakers and control the volume. Will this device do what I want?

You have a very specific demanding. You puzzle can be resolved as these following steps.

First output and split your TV sound into two separated lines using a 3.5mm Stereo Audio Jack (Male) splitter to Dual 3.5mm Stereo Adapter (Female) and a 3.5mm Female to 2-Male RCA Y-Adapter likes this pic shows. 3.5mm_female_to_2_Male_RCA_Y_Adapter

One is for Your Bluetooth receiver. Just put the other back into the audio input slot of your TV. In this step you may need this 3.5mm male to RCA male Y cable.

This combination of different audio adapters can give you exactly what you want and cost you only a few bucks.

Except that the Audio Input port for his TV is for connecting a specific device (like a DVD player).

For example, let’s say he has the TV switched to the “HDMI 1” input to which his DirecTV DVR is connected . How is he going to hear anything if the main audio OUT of the TV is redirected to the “HDMI 3” input when he’s not on that particular input?

The solution is to split the audio out like you mentioned, but then rather run the audio back into the TV, run it to an A/V receiver and control the volume of it instead with the receiver’s remote control.
